Exploring MediStays Dandenong: Purpose-Built Accessibility

I had the chance to visit MediStays brand new property in Dandenong, and it sets a new standard for accessible accommodation in Melbourne’s South-East. Purpose built for short and medium term stays (STA + MTA) as well as supported disability accommodation (SDA), this property is perfect for people transitioning from hospital care or anyone needing fully wheelchair accessible housing. With features like options for ceiling hoists, cleverly designed rooms, and round the clock care staff for those who need it, it’s clear every detail was carefully considered to support comfort and independence. Whether you’re there for recovery, respite, or a temporary accessible home base, this property ticks so many boxes.

Let me take you through my visit so you can see what makes this place such a standout.

Smooth Arrival

Getting there is easy, with convenient on-site parking tucked at the back of the property with dedicated accessible spots. The entrance makes a great first impression – a smooth, gently winding ramp leading up to automatic push to open doors. This creates a stress-free arrival, whether you’re using a wheelchair, walker, or scooter like me, and truly supports independence!

Once inside, the lift to the upper floors is another win – it’s straight down the end of the wide hallway. Moving through the space, you immediately notice how well it flows – no awkward tight corners or obstacles via a check in desk or reception which makes coming and going straight forward.

Accessible and Comfortable Private Rooms

The private rooms are exactly what you’d hope for in accessible accommodation – bright, functional, and comfortable. Each room comes with a spacious ensuite bathroom that’s designed for easy navigation with a wheelchair or hoist. Each room is designed to cater to a wide range of accessibility needs.

One detail I particularly appreciated was the placement of call buttons next to the beds and in the bathrooms. These provide peace of mind, allowing guests to request assistance quickly. It’s small but essential features like this that demonstrate how well the property understands the needs of its guests.

One detail I loved was the separate rooms for carers or support workers. These spaces include a couch, a TV, and even a small kitchenette, giving carers their own retreat while staying close by. It’s a great way to balance support and personal space, something many accommodations overlook.

On the second floor, I had the chance to see inside one the apartments of the supported disability accommodation (SDA). These spaces are a masterclass in accessible design. The SDA apartments are so inviting – featuring two bedroom layouts with open, airy designs and plenty of natural light. Each apartment includes a flat entry outdoor balcony, a fully accessible kitchen and laundry, a lounge area, study nook and an accessible bathroom adjoining the main bedroom. This apartment is both functional and comfortable, making it incredibly inviting and practical to live in.

Inviting Communal Spaces

This property isn’t just about the private rooms – the communal areas are a big highlight too.

The community room on the first floor is bright, open, with plenty of space for mobility aids. It’s ideal for meeting new people, enjoying a meal, or even taking part in activities like arts and crafts. The accessible kitchen within the community area is a great feature, making it easy for guests to whip up a snack or meal. It’s all designed to create a sense of connection while respecting everyone’s need for privacy and independence.

And then there’s the rooftop! Accessible via the lift, this flat, easy to navigate space offers sweeping views of the Dandenong Ranges – a perfect spot to soak up some sun or enjoy fresh air without leaving the property. This space has plenty of potential for gatherings like a casual BBQ with family or friends or quiet moments of relaxation. While the space wasn’t fully furnished during my visit, I could easily see its future potential as a favourite spot for guests.

Final Thoughts

MediStays Dandenong is more than just accommodation – it’s a thoughtfully crafted space designed to make life easier and more enjoyable for people with accessibility needs and their support teams. From the smooth entry to the well planned private rooms and inviting communal areas, every detail shows a genuine commitment to inclusivity and comfort.

If you’re looking for a place to support you after a hospital stay, in need of respite, or a temporary accessible base in Melbourne’s South-East, this property is definitely worth checking out!
